The Clarke Corner

Welcome to the website of Chris Clarke, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication at George Mason University. I am also affiliated with the Center for Climate Change Communication.

Two articles that my colleague, Graham Dixon, and I recently published on media coverage of the autism-vaccine controversy have recently gained attention on several blogs (click here, here, and here).

My research focuses on strategic risk communication about health and environmental issues. Specific interests include:

(1) How people seek, attend to, and share information about health and environmental risks; factors that drive (or impede) such behavior; implications for risk communication strategies;

(2) Designing messages to communicate about health and environmental risks such as social determinants of health and vaccine safety;

(3) Media coverage of health and environmental risk; the role of journalism norms in shaping coverage.
